Nestled in the corner at Kung Fu Necktie’s upstairs stage this past Tuesday 9/13, The Glazzies recreated history, in a way. Watching this duo play loud, like really loud, with a punk-like vengeance reminded me of what it could have been like to have seen Nirvana play in their early days (I wasn’t there to actually see an early Nirvana show, but a girl can dream right?).
Tuesday evening marked The Glazzies’ first performance in Philly. The band is embarking on their first national tour in support of their new LP Kill Me Kindly, produced by Justin Pizzoferrato (Speedy Ortiz, Sonic Youth), which was just released this Friday 9/16 via Old Flame Records. Those in attendance at Tuesday’s show had an opportunity to grab a copy before the general public. Kill Me Kindly follows the 2015 Satin Stain EP that featured Dinosaur Jr.’s Murph on the drums.
Hailing from Long Island, NY, the duo specialize in hook-filled anthems thick with the buzz of overdriven guitars, reverb galore. During most of the songs in their 30 minute set, guitarist/vocalist Peter Landi and drummer Dave Horn broke down in a musical frenzy that got the crowd headbanging and jumping in delight.
Highlights included the high energy and strong interlude of “So Strange” and the infectious spirit of “Paper Thin” off of their new record, but the entire set was an enjoyable string of hard-rocking tunes. Some of the songs were a little less punk and grunge and little more pop and restrained, including new single “Wasting Time” and an untitled song that the band is still working on. They finished with “Take It Easy,” a song from their 2012 self-released album Time Bomb Love. The audience let loose as Landi screamed “take it easy” with intense fervor.
Following their set, with band equipment strewn about the floor, Landi and Horn explained to me how they worked on this LP for two years, and releasing it has been like “hatching an egg finally, as weird as that metaphor may sound,” joked Landi. It’s just another step in the right direction for the band, who has been receiving buzz from all music corners. If you miss the passion and energy of the heyday of 90’s alternative rock, look no further than The Glazzies.
